Student Government Recap

Student Government is an organization that strives to improve our school through advocacy and school spirit. We plan theme days, decorate the hallways for Homecoming, plan and run pep auds, create a variety of advocacy committees, and so much more. Read this article to explore what we have been up to recently!

Homecoming and Prom Song List

Imagine listening to your favorite songs while you and your closest friends sing and dance, though in reality it may be closer to screaming and jumping. That’s what school dances are supposed to be—one of the most fun parts of high school; however, the reality is that the horrendous songs we have been listening to suck the joy out of the experience. Student Government members are truly fed up with the music we have heard over the past few years, and I’m sure the rest of the student body is too. As a group, we brainstormed how to make dances feel more like they appear in movies. We created a master spreadsheet with song ideas for both Homecoming and Prom, hoping to salvage our school dances. If any readers have appropriate songs they want to hear, please let your Student Government friends know. Let’s make dances fun again!

Pep Aud Committee

Student Government also has the opportunity to plan and run the pep auds here at North Scott High School. Our Pep Aud Committee has already begun to plan for the aud on March 27th. The theme will be Gold Out. Everyone, be ready for tons of fun games, announcements from our school organizations, and performances from our Lancer Band, Cheerleaders, and Dance Team!

WIN and P6 Committee

It is not surprising that the WIN and P6 debate has been all the buzz the past few months—students and staff have major concerns. As members of the Student Government, we must advocate for these concerns. The WIN and P6 committee was created on November 10th and is led by seniors Vivian McGee and Parker Herrington. Leaders Vivian and Parker, as well as committee members Madi Hillmann, Kayla Triplett, and Dana Webb, have been conducting in-person interviews and sending online Google Forms to collect data from students, teachers, and parents for months. It is fair to say that our committee listened to and read numerous passionate responses. With this information, we have evaluated the most practical schedule for our high school and are now ready to present it.

The committee will meet with Mr. Lehn, our principal, on January 30th. In that meeting, we will present our data to him. We hope that the North Scott Administration Team will consider it when planning next year’s schedule.

Lancer Way Committee

North Scott High School has implemented the Lancer Way Awards to recognize positive student behavior, but an important question remains: Are students who consistently demonstrate these values being fully recognized? Many students give their best effort every day, yet their dedication can be overlooked in favor of‌ more visible, momentary actions. While these actions also deserve recognition, they do not always reflect the sustained commitment by other students.

This committee was recently formed to address questions such as: How can our school shift its focus to better support and prepare students for life after high school? What alternative opportunities can we provide to push every student to grow into their best selves?

Did any of these committees spark your interest? Or do you have your own concern you want addressed? Join Student Government! We welcome new members year-round, and our meetings are every Monday at 3:15 in Mrs. Sambdman’s classroom (C10). Hopefully, we will see some new faces soon!
