The Lance Wins Big at IHSPA

This was the first year that The Lance entered the Iowa High School Press Association awards, and we performed well--especially with such a small staff. Please reread these award-winning articles or read them for the first time if you missed them:

Megan Kelly won second place in the Sports Story Category for her in-depth article on a fairly new sport at North Scott: "A Sport Evolved: Girls Wrestling."

Scott Stoneking won second place in the Column Category for his revealing interview with a transgender student, discussing how recent legislation was impacting them: "A Message from your Transgender Peers."

Ava Hagedorn won an honorable mention in the Reviews Category for her charming, sister-driven review of "Cafe D'Marie--A Restaurant Review."

Matea Kitchen, who was a guest writer for The Lance, won first place in the Feature Category for her story "Understanding My Incomplete Identity."

Big congratulations are due to all of our writers here at The Lance. These students work overtime to get stories to you every week no matter how much they have going on in their lives--and they have a lot going on in their lives. I wanted to personally thank the class this year. There were high expectations for hard, fulfilling work, and you all rose the the challenge. If you see any of these talented students, please give them your congratulations!

A heartfelt thank you to:

Ava Hagedorn

Frankie Bell

Isabella Boeken

Cella Hanssen

Megan Kelly

Madolyn Lewis

and

Scott Stoneking

Thanks for reading The Lance this year. One more issue to go. --Sean Chapman
