Brrr...cold start to 2026

"Millions of people in the United States are in the middle of an exceptional cold stretch — one of the longest in decades for some — and it's only going to get more brutal headed into next week."
I'd rather hear "6, 7" than have these cold temperatures. But just like all good things, all bad things have to come to an end, too. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Later this week, we are finally getting back above 20 degrees and a chance at above freezing temperatures. But this is Iowa, so we might warm up, then get cold again, plus we're barely a month into winter. Especially with a second cold front coming to blast through the country. But January is usually the coldest month of winter.

Along with these crazy cold temperatures, there was a massive snowstorm blowing throughout the country, which brought strong winds, dangerously cold temperatures, power outages, and, of course, snow.
People are getting trapped in this cold weather, and some are without heat. Some people tragically got swept up in the cold waters.
Thankfully, warmer temps are just around the corner!
