13 years and roughly 2,340 school days are over on a random Thursday in May.
High school is one of the most exciting yet challenging times in life. It is important to make the most of these years, especially with the supportive environment we have at North Scott. Below are pieces of advice from me, a graduating senior, to help you make the most of your high school experience.
Schoolwork

Take College Classes
North Scott students are incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to take college classes in high school, especially because many are offered for free. Challenge yourself academically, explore your interests, and take advantage of opportunities that can prepare you for the future.

Study with Friends
Many classes require studying outside of school hours, and while it may not always sound exciting, there are definitely ways to make it enjoyable. Invite your friends to study with you—you may even find yourselves at a local coffee shop with a fun drink in hand. Studying with friends is a great way to learn collaboratively while also spending quality time together.
Clubs and Extracurriculars

Join Band
Wow. How do I even begin to summarize what the North Scott High School Band program has meant to me? I admire our band directors for creating such a welcoming and family-like environment for their students. Because of band, I have formed many friendships that I know I will value for the rest of my life. Band easily became one of my homes during high school, and I can confidently say it could become one of yours too.

Join Student Government
If you are a student who wants to make a difference at North Scott, join Student Government. I was lucky to be involved in this organization for all four years of high school. It easily became one of the most meaningful parts of my experience here. From decorating the hallways and planning dress-up days to running the pep aud and advocating for policy changes, Student Government balances fun with leadership. Meetings are held on Mondays at 3:15 in Jennifer Sambdman’s room (C10).
Events

Go to Homecoming
Home sweet homecoming! Many people say homecoming is boring or overrated, but I wholeheartedly disagree. Homecoming is as fun as you choose to make it. So go, dance your heart out, and enjoy being surrounded by your classmates.

Go to Prom
Prom is definitely the most popular dance at our school, especially since it takes place on a boat. Embrace the forced fun and explore every part of the experience. Whether you are admiring the view from the deck, chatting with friends at the tables, or dancing, make those few hours count.

Go to Night School and Ten of Soul Concerts
If you enjoy concerts, let me tell you—there is nothing better than a Night School or Ten of Soul performance. These groups play countless hits, both old and new, creating a fun atmosphere for everyone. Go support your fellow students and even NSHS staff member Mr. McMann at these concerts. I promise you will not regret it.
If you are eager to attend, there is a free upcoming concert on May 23rd at 6 p.m. at The Tangled Wood.
Self-Care

Hang Out With Friends
Amid busy schedules filled with school, work, activities, and sports, do not forget to make time for your friends. Prioritize the people who bring you joy and make you feel lighter.

Sleep
My favorite form of self-care is, of course, sleeping. There is nothing better than a cozy slumber that leaves you feeling refreshed and rested. Coming from someone who has definitely been sleep-deprived during this busy school year, please remember to take naps or go to bed early once in a while.
Conclusion
I am incredibly grateful for my experiences at North Scott and for the lessons they taught me. I hope that everyone who walks through these halls leaves feeling like they learned something meaningful, not just academically, but personally as well. We are lucky to be part of such a close-knit community, and I am so thankful for the teachers and peers who have supported me every step of the way.
To everyone reading this: Find your joy in life. Hold onto it. And most importantly, share that joy with the people around you.
