Those who frequently drive in Davenport have likely started to notice new mobile speed cameras. The Davenport Police Department has recently started new mobile speed cabinets as another way to track speeding, especially by schools and on busy roads.
How Do These Cabinets Work?

The mobile speed cameras work using radars in order to track how fast cars are going. When a car is speeding, the camera takes a picture of the vehicle and the license plate. Then, a letter is sent to the owner of the vehicle. The city states that the cameras are only triggered if drivers are going more than 11 mph over the speed limit; however, in school zones, cameras can be triggered at only 5 mph over the limit.
How Much Are The Fines?
The amount that needs to be paid depends on how far over the speed limit the driver was going. The current fines listed by the city are:
$75, 11-20 mph over the limit
$100, 21-25 mph over the limit
$200, 26-30 mph over the limit
$500, 30+ mph over the limit
These fine amounts were updated to match Iowa's most recent traffic camera regulations, since regulations were changed in 2024. Under the new laws, cities must have approval from the Iowa Department of Transportation before installing new systems to enforce traffic laws. The law also requires warning signs to tell drivers about these cameras. Studies done on traffic enforcement show that there are fewer crashes and injuries in places where cameras are used. Davenport officials also state that there have been fewer speeding violations where cameras have been placed.

According to news reports, the mobile speed cabinets are scheduled to be in these locations through the week of May 4th through May 11th:
6700 Division Street
