What Is The Met Gala?

The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. The event marks the opening night of the institute's spring exhibition and brings together influential figures from fashion, entertainment, sports,‌ etc. Over the years, the event has become one of the most well-known charity galas in the world, consistently raising millions to support fashion as an art form. This year's gala was held on Monday, May 4th. As tradition goes, it took place on the first Monday in May.

What Was This Year's Theme?

The 2026 Met Gala's theme was titled “Costume Art.” This topic is said to explore how clothing connects with artistic expression across history. A few standout looks include Beyoncé, who wore a custom skeleton-inspired look by Olivier Rousteing. Gracie Abrams, whose Chanel dress was inspired by the work of Gustav Klimt and took 294 hours and about 5150 embroidery elements to make. Louisa Jacobson, wearing British designer Dilara Findikoglu’s rendition of Joan of Arc, covered in coins, safety pins, and other found objects in lieu of chain mail. Chase Infinitee, who wore an embroidered trompe l’oeil dress by Thom Browne, which used 1.5 million sequins. And Sabrina Carpenter, who wore a custom Christian Dior gown featuring rhinestone-trimmed film strips.

Who Gets Invited?

The guest list is carefully curated and usually includes around 400-500 guests, who are usually celebrities. Being invited is ‌considered a sign of cultural influence. The Met Gala is as much about status as it is about style. This year's carpet was hosted by well-known figures such as Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour.

What Do They Actually Do?

Although the majority of the evening is private, the Meta gala includes a red carpet where guests arrive and take photos before entering the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Inside, guests can enjoy a cocktail hour followed by dinner. The night also features surprise live performances, often from major artists. Finally, guests are given private access to explore the Costume Institute’s new exhibition before it opens to the public. Throughout the entire event, there is a strict no-phone policy, keeping most of the moments inside the gala and unseen by the public.

Combining fashion and art, the Met Gala continues to deliver on its mission of celebrating creativity and fashion.
