There’s currently an asteroid coming towards earth, but NASA has a plan to keep it from getting too close. The Double Asteroid Redirect Test spacecraft, otherwise known as DART, will be their solution.
DART was originally launched into space in November 2021, Now, 10 months later, NASA plans to launch 3 trajectory correction maneuvers in order to catch up to the asteroid.
This particular asteroid poses no harm to earth, however, it’s good practice in planetary defense for future space rocks incoming. It’s name is Dimorphos, and we plan to use it to test out a way to keep the planet safe. This planned crash will take place September 26.
