A huge thank you to the high school librarians and SLAB for creating this fun activity for the student body and staff!
This past March, our high school library did a spin-off of March Madness, which is usually a giant bracket of college basketball teams that face off against one another for the coveted spot of top team that spring season. The SLAB team took 32 books and asked students to vote between them. The first round of bracket matchings is listed below. The winning books are bolded below:

The Giver by Lois Lowry VS Divergent by Veronica Roth
The Giver is a book that most students were required to read in upper elementary school, so its placement makes perfect sense.
The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes VS Legend by Marie Lu
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins VS My Life with the Walter Boys by Ali Novak
The Hunger Games was also required reading for many upper elementary students, but many teens have read it of their own volition as well. The hit movies are also a contributing factor.
Powerless by Lauren Roberts VS Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Wonder by RJ Palacio VS Ghost by Jason Reynolds
A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L’Engle VS The Wizard of Oz by Frank L Baum
Twilight by Stephanie Meyer VS The Selection by Kiera Cass
Twilight was and still is a sensational book that many readers have enjoyed at one point. However, The Selection is an amazing concept and a very invigorating read for YA book enjoyers.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling VS To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
Harry Potter has been a classic since the early 90's, and it's not going anywhere.
The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han VS The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Another example of the early 2000s apocalyptic dystopian book craze.
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury VS Ground Zero by Alan Gratz
A Good Girl's Guide To Murder by Holly Jackson VS One Of Us is Lying by Karen M McManus
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder has been a seriously popular book since 2020.
The Outsiders by S.E Hinton VS Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
In my opinion, both The Outsiders and Flowers for Algernon are outstanding books and really tie for me.
They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera VS The Fault In Our Stars by John Green
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan VS Nothing Like the Movies by Lynn Painter
Percy Jackson is nostalgic for a lot of today's high school students who read it as a kid.
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee VS Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
This win was surprising, considering Frankenstein is required reading for sophomores in Honors English II. But it is still, To Kill a Mockingbird is the better option in my opinion.
Scythe by Neil Shusterman VS Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit
Schythe is an amazing book and definitely worthy of winning, but its win is still shocking considering that Tuck Everlasting is required reading for upper elementary.

The next round consisted of:
The Giver by Lois Lowry VS Legend by Marie Lu
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins VS Powerless by Lauren Roberts
Wonder by RJ Palacio VS A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L’Engle
Twilight by Stephanie Meyer VS Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K Rowling
The Maze Runner by James Dashner VS Ground Zero by Alan Gratz
A Good Girl's Guide To Murder by Holly Jackson VS The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera VS Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee VS Scythe by Neil Shusterman
The next round was as follows:
The Giver by Lois Lowry VS The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Wonder by R.J. Palacio VS Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K Rowling
Maze Runner by James Dashner VS The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan VS To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The semi-finals were next with:
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins V.S Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K Rowling
The Outsiders by S.E Hinton V.S Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

After a long wait and many Google Forms later, the conclusion is that The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is the favorite amongst North Scott High School students and staff. A huge thank you to the high school librarians and SLAB for creating this fun activity for the student body and staff!

SLAB put this together, not the librarians. This was an entirety student-led project.
