What really is ISASP testing? What can it do for the state of Iowa? Or for North Scott High School? ISASP is the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress and is the main test used in Iowa to measure student progress. It is a statewide test that measures student learning, and it also plays a part in understanding how well students understand materials taught in class. It is a very important assessment that gives feedback and helps make important decisions with programs, professional development, staffing, and financial decisions.
The concept was first introduced in 2019 for 3rd-grade to 11th-grade students. Contrary to past tests, ISASP is taken online and is not timed, which allows students to work at their own pace without the pressure of a time limit. It is taken each year and focuses on reading, writing, math, and science for 5th, 8th, and 10th grade. Both district-wide and state-wide assessments are authorized by the Iowa Code and used for federal reporting, which is defined by the Every Student Succeeds Act. The test is also used as a way to measure what students have learned over the course of the school year and is required to be taken under the Every Student Succeeds Act, which makes sure all students are on grade level.
The results of ISASP help determine student proficiency and whether or not expectations are being met. These tests also give data to the Iowa Department of Education so they can make decisions about curricula, funding, and policies. Whether or not schools are teaching what they are supposed to is also reflected in ISASP scores, or whether or not a certain school needs extra support.

Taking these tests every year also makes it easier to track progress by comparing scores. One example is using these tests to see whether students were able to recover academically after the COVID pandemic, and ensuring all students are now caught up again. ISASP scores allow North Scott to help administrators know which subjects students need extra help in or how well teaching strategies are working. These scores are very important and beneficial for making decisions about teaching methods and how students learn best, as well as demonstrating what they have learned over the year.
While most students do not take the test seriously, it greatly impacts how the school and curriculum will be run, so students need to try their best. That way, schools can get the help they need if there is a struggle on a certain subject. ISASP is a good method for measuring knowledge in different subjects, making sure students are on par with state standards, and helping to improve schools.
