What I wish I knew as a freshman

Looking back on my four years of high school, I can't help but laugh at my freshman self – nervous about getting to class on time, making sure I had lunch with my friends and convinced every little thing was the end of the world. Now, as a senior, I realize how much I've learned, not just from textbooks and random assignments on Canvas but, from my experiences. If I could go back in time and give my freshman self advice this is what I would say:
Your GPA Matters, But it's not everything!

I remember stressing out over every quiz and crying over a bad grade with the thought of my future being over. Truth is, yes, your GPA is important, but colleges and employers care just as much about who you are as a person. Prioritize your grades, but do not ever let them define you.
Get Involved (Even If It's Scary!)

One of the things I regret most is joining the cheerleading team in my senior year. I made some of the best memories on that team and met so many different people! I have to be honest as a freshman, I was too nervous to join clubs or extracurriculars because I thought I wouldn't fit in. Big Mistake. The best decision I ever made was getting involved in Service club, Cheerleading, and Orchestra. If I had never gotten involved, I wouldn't have made all these brand-new connections with my people. I just wish I made them sooner. So take my advice and don't wait – take the leap.
Popularity isn't as important as you think
I wasted too much time worrying about fitting in. By senior year, you realize that the “popular crowd” doesn't really matter. Find genuine friends who support you, not ones who just look cool on social media.
Teachers are your Allies, Not your Enemies.
Trust me this took a long time for me to learn. I used to see teachers as obstacles who are only here to make our lives miserable, but they're some of the best resources you have. They want to see you succeed. Ask questions, stay after class, take advantage of WIN (even if we all don't like it…), and most importantly build relationships – it'll pay off when you need help or even a recommendation letter.
Time Flies – Enjoy It!

Everyone says “High school will go by in the blink of an eye!”, but I didn't believe it until now. High school goes by fast. Don't rush through it wishing to be older. Go to the football games, say yes to the school dances, and take in the little moments!
If I had known these things as a freshman, I probably would have saved myself a TON of stress. But that's the thing about high school – you live, you learn, and by the time you figure it out its all over.
So, to all the freshmen or incoming freshmen: enjoy the ride, and don't be afraid to try new things. I know high school feels like the end of the world but it is the start of the next chapter so don't sweat the small stuff. You will be just fine.
