Do-Over Scholarship by Alissa Bockenfeld

Updated: Feb 18, 2022

I will never forget that night. Tears streamed down my face as the red and blue lights flashed from my rearview mirror.

I looked all around the vehicle, then lay my forehead against the steering wheel in disbelief.

The entire car was bent, and the windows of the passenger seat- shattered. I was speechless.

What had I done? Lily, don’t leave me.

I watched as the paramedic rushed to the scene. He opened the door abruptly where Lily was sitting; glass pieces covered her body, and she was bruised. Without hesitation, a stretcher was wheeled out; the sound of the wheels screeching tattooed in my mind.

She was somewhat conscious; she told me she was going to be fine. She told me it wasn’t my fault… and that she loved me. In a blink of an eye, she was gone. Would she really be okay? Would that be our last conversation? I couldn’t help to think of all the things I could’ve done differently.

Had I not been more responsible...

Had I not told Lily to turn down the loud, blaring music…

Had I not been more focused on switching lanes...

The ruins of the crash wouldn’t have haunted me, leaving me traumatized.

Losing a friend was the most terrifying thought ever.

Was she going to survive?
